Tooth Extractions in Hamilton

Tooth Extractions in Hamilton

Most people dread the idea of a tooth extraction more than the procedure itself. In 17 years of practice on Locke Street, that’s probably the thing we hear most after the appointment: “That was easier than I thought.”
We do both simple extractions and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth. Before we start anything, we walk you through exactly what’s going to happen, what you’ll feel (pressure, not pain), and what recovery looks like.
When a tooth needs to come out

Saving a tooth is always the first option we look at. But sometimes extraction is the right call, and delaying it makes things worse.

Common reasons we extract teeth:

If you’ve been told you need an extraction and you’re not sure why, we’re happy to explain it at your appointment. You deserve to understand the reasoning.

Simple extractions
A simple extraction is for a tooth that’s visible in the mouth and can be removed without surgery. We loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator, then lift it out. The whole thing usually takes under 20 minutes.
You’ll be numb from local anesthetic before anything starts. You’ll feel pressure during the procedure, which is normal, but you shouldn’t feel sharp pain. If you do, tell us immediately and we’ll add more anesthetic.
Recovery from a simple extraction is typically 1 to 3 days of mild soreness. We’ll give you aftercare instructions before you leave.
Wisdom tooth removal
Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually come in between ages 17 and 25. Not everyone needs them removed. But when they’re impacted (stuck under the gum or growing at an angle), they can cause pain, infection, and crowding of the teeth in front of them.
We take X-rays to see exactly how your wisdom teeth are positioned before recommending removal. If they’re fully impacted and close to the nerve, we’ll refer you to an oral surgeon. If they’re partially erupted or can be removed safely in our office, we handle it here.
Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical extraction: we make a small incision in the gum, remove the tooth (sometimes in pieces), and close the site with sutures. It sounds more involved than it is. Most patients go home the same day and are back to normal within 3 to 5 days.
A few things that help recovery go smoothly: keeping gauze on the site for the first few hours, avoiding straws for 24 to 48 hours (suction can dislodge the clot), eating soft foods for a few days, and not smoking. We’ll go over all of this with you before you leave.
What about replacing the tooth?
For wisdom teeth, no replacement is needed. For other teeth, extraction is often the beginning of a conversation about what comes next.
The gap a missing tooth leaves doesn’t stay neutral. Surrounding teeth drift toward it over months and years. The bone underneath starts to shrink without a root to stimulate it. If replacement is something you want to consider, the sooner that conversation happens, the more options you have.
We can talk through implants, bridges, or partial dentures at your appointment. No pressure to decide on the day of the extraction, but it’s worth knowing your options.
Our approach
We’ve noticed that patients who feel informed going in are consistently more relaxed during the procedure. So we take time before we start. We show you the X-ray. We explain the steps. We check in during the procedure.
Our 4.7-star Google rating across 58 reviews includes more than a few patients who came in anxious about an extraction and left relieved. “Gentle” and “they explained everything” come up often. That’s not an accident. It reflects the way Dr. Tabesh and our team have run this practice for 17 years.

If you have a tooth that’s causing pain, or you’ve been told it needs to come out, don’t sit on it. Infections from damaged teeth can spread quickly and become much more serious.
