Who’s a candidate for implants?
Most adults with a missing tooth or a tooth that can’t be saved are candidates. The main requirements are:
- Enough bone density in the jaw to anchor the implant (we check this with imaging at your consultation)
- Healthy gums (active gum disease needs to be treated first)
- No medical conditions that significantly affect healing
If you’ve been told in the past that you don’t have enough bone, it’s worth a second look. Bone grafting can sometimes rebuild the foundation before an implant is placed. We’ll tell you honestly whether that changes your options.
Smokers can still get implants, but the failure rate is higher. We’ll discuss that risk with you directly so you can make an informed call.
What the process looks like
The implant process happens in stages, and the timeline is longer than most people expect.
- Step 1: Consultation and imaging. We take a 3D scan of your jaw to measure bone density and map the placement precisely. This is where we decide whether you're a straightforward candidate or whether prep work (like a bone graft) is needed first.
- Step 2: Implant placement. A short surgical appointment. The titanium post goes into the bone under local anesthetic. Most patients describe the recovery as less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction.
- Step 3: Healing (osseointegration). The implant fuses with the bone over 3 to 6 months. During this time, you'll typically have a temporary crown if the gap is visible.
- Step 4: Crown placement. Once the implant is stable, we attach the permanent crown. This is the appointment that feels like a regular dental visit.
